We are writing our own history and learning every day.

Juneteenth. Many of us have heard of it, but we don’t all celebrate. And some of us celebrate it on a different date depending on the country we live in.

At its core, Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States in 1865. In Canada, we have Emancipation Day in August.

We should celebrate any steps that are taken to right the wrongs of the past. But the reality is that, while slavery may have ended, the roots of systemic racism run deep and those wounds are still fresh. In the United States, Juneteenth and all it stands for is not even a Federally recognized holiday. Whether you are in the US, Canada, UK, Africa – wherever you call home – the Black community does not have the luxury of waiting for things to happen and we certainly cannot rest on those trending moments where we have a broader community of support for a short period of time.

There are so many individuals and organizations who are doing incredible things to help our community heal during difficult times and find hope when we feel there is none to be had. Here are just a few organizations you can support and learn from today and every day:

Afri'Ka For Life

Afri’Ka For Life is dedicated to empowering the indigenous people of Africa by sharing ways to build, and improve, life experiences with respect and dignity without disrupting nature and the incumbent culture. The do so by introducing safe renewable energy, recycle/upcycle techniques, and agricultural development while organically providing job and business creation.

One of their goals is to build 12 recycling centers in 12 countries. This year they will kick things off by building three of those recycling centers.

Afri’Ka For Life recently launched a tree planting project in Uganda, which the locals have named “Plant It + Name It”. They believe that the future needs a chance to support all the great things today’s children will do for the planet. This project helps to instill that preparation and respect of nature and it brings hope for the future. To date, they have planted 800 trees near the Ihuura Primary School in the Kagandi District.

Afri-Ka For Life is always looking for volunteers as well as help with their fundraising initiatives for various projects like the two mentioned above.

1 year later: Post George Floyd

It’s been 1 year since our collective shock of witnessing George Floyd’s death. A moment in time has renewed a movement of change. Only a few moments in history have sparked such a reaction, notably Emmett Till’s murder and Rosa Parks’ arrest, which spear headed the 20th century civil right movement.

There is now heightened awareness on the many disparities experienced by the black community within several sectors such as employment, housing, education, justice, local government and health care.

In our latest blog we explore the various changes the Black community has started seeing and how it should affect our actions moving forward.
