Keep the spirit of giving and community alive this Holiday Season

Giving back should not stop with Giving Tuesday as we head into the Holiday Season
Giving Tuesday has passed, and the Holiday Season is in full swing. Regardless of what you celebrate at this time of year, the one thing that we can all agree on is that it has been a difficult year. Many in our communities have
found themselves in need for the first time in their lives. Food bank lines are longer than ever. Charitable organizations are feeling the effects of a year without in-person fundraising initiatives within the community. There is a lack of funding and resources available for organizations because it has been directed elsewhere as we deal with a global pandemic. A recent report from
Foundation for Black Communities showed that Black organizations in Canada receive only 7 cents for every $100 donated and the rest of the world is not doing much better.
Despite everything we are facing as a global community, the one thing that should lift our spirits this Holiday Season is simple. Although we are all facing unprecedented hardships, our community has pulled together across the
world. Black voices are fighting for racial justice and allies are, now more than ever, speaking louder to advocate for equality.
In the spirit of the season, it is important that we do not lose that feeling of community. We must look out for our Brothers and Sisters, both in our immediate community as well as back home. In this difficult time, we must do all
we can to ensure we are lifting each other up – both emotionally and filling specific needs.
There are so many organizations that provide basic necessities to the Black community all over the world. We do not all have a lot to give, but you can support these organizations in so many ways that don’t involve financial support
– even sharing a social media post to help spread the word when they are in need of donations.
The Support Black Charities directory features organizations that are both Black-led and have a mandate to support Black communities all over the world. There are 9 different categories to choose from and 13 different countries
supported. The question is, what kind of impact do you want to have on your community?

From school supplies and technology to positively impact youth education to clothing, food, and necessities for those in need, Impact Jamaica strives to make a difference for individuals of Jamaican heritage.
While their programs have historically focused on Jamaica, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic they have expanded their outreach to impact local Black communities in Atlanta, GA where they are based. During the
pandemic, Impact Jamaica has been distributing food to the homeless and covering grocery expenses for families in need in Atlanta. They have also maintained their programs in Jamaica, providing much needed resources and technology for youth to complete their education.
If you would like to support an organization who is working both at home and back home this holiday season, check out the work that Impact Jamaica is doing.
