How to lead change in your community

We are looking at a moment in time where change is needed. Change within our communities, economic change, political change, and socio-economic change. These changes are needed on a global scale and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. It can also be disheartening when we look to our global leaders to lead these changes, but they won’t take up the charge – whether they believe change is needed or not.

Rather than relying on those same global leaders, why not look within to see how you can create change. Even small changes can have incredible effects on those around you within your social network and your community.

If you aren’t sure how to lead change, or you are afraid to take the first steps on your own, here are a few things you can do today to start making a difference:

Get involved: Connect with a Black-led charity, non-profit, or organization that is looking to create change. If you can’t donate money, there are many ways to get involved from becoming a mentor for youth, to cooking meals for those in need and more. Check out our directory for options all over the world!
Buy Black: Support local, Black-owned businesses to help elevate the Black community.
Amplify Black Voices: Find and support Black Creators and Influencers on social media to help amplify Black Voices. Join in the dialogue they have started and share their content.

STEMEdFund

STEM Educational Fund (STEMEdFund) is a non-profit in Delaware that is dedicated to empowering under-served girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 18. They want to open doors for these youth who can gain the skills and support needed for a self-sufficient future. Through year-long programming, STEMEdFund provides guidance, exposure, opportunity, and resources so youth can pursue internships, higher education, and employment opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Robotics program that is running right now has been a wild success. Classes have been moved online due to the pandemic, and students are building a robot at home. At the conclusion of the class, the kids will have a fully functioning robot!

There is currently a shortage of women and people of colour in STEM careers and STEMEdFund aims to change that. They see a future where women and minorities lead the way in STEM, conquering the challenges of our global society.

Philanthropy and the Black Community

With Black Philanthropy Month and Giving Black Day behind us, it feels like philanthropy is gaining more traction in Black communities worldwide.

Spring and Summer 2020 were marked by a series of events which disproportionately negatively affected Black communities. In response, we’ve seen a surge of philanthropic endeavours as evidenced by an increase in Black specific funds created over the last 4 months from corporations, foundations, charitable organizations, as well as wealthy, well-known philanthropists.

Has philanthropy for the black community reached a turning point? I think it has.
