Standing in silence can be as powerful as yelling from the rooftops. As the United States faces a looming election, racial tensions have been brought to the forefront of all of our minds and our mouths all over the world.
In over 60 countries protests have been underway since May 26th when George Floyd was killed. People all over the world are calling for an end to the injustices the Black community faces every day. Whether from police
brutality, within healthcare, or even micro-aggressions in the workplace, the Black community and its allies are standing strong.
We often talk about helping to amplify Black voices who to give them a bigger platform. Here are 9 people you should look out for on social media to join in the discussion and find different ways to get
involved.
Everyone needs a place to call home and shelter is a basic human right. Almost one-third of Canada’s homeless population is 16-24 years old. 43% of youth experiencing homelessness were in foster care or group homes. At 18 many young
people age out of foster care with inadequate skills and support to transition successfully.
Restoration and Empowerment for Social Transition Centres or R.E.S.T. Centres empowers youth to live healthier and happier lives with adequate support and opportunities to contribute to a better society. They do this through
transition to housing programs that provide diverse, multi-faceted supports for youth leaving foster such as affordable housing, mentorship, counseling, education, life skills, and employment training opportunities.
If you are looking for resources or to get involved, R.E.S.T Centres has several programs running throughout October such as:
The Bare Necessities program: Running since July 2020 as a response to issues
arising from the pandemic, this program provides weekly groceries to 20 young people in the Region of Peel.
Black Youth Matter: A new support line and online support group for Black youth to help them
overcome challenges they may currently face with school, mental health, or anything that comes up.
