✈️ Black Aviation Professionals Network (BAPN)

🇨🇦 Based in Ontario, Canada
The Black Aviation Professionals Network (BAPN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing diversity in aviation and aerospace. Founded to address the lack of representation in these industries, BAPN connects professionals, inspires youth, and empowers the Black community to explore aviation careers.

Programs and Initiatives:

StarGaze Mentorship Program: Offers career development, certification support, and networking for Black aviation professionals.
Youth Outreach: Introduces young people to the opportunities available in aviation.
Career Advancement Workshops: Equips professionals with tools to extend their “career runway.”

🌟 Shining Lighte Youth Charity (SLYC)

🇨🇦 Based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
The Shining Lighte Youth Charity (SLYC) empowers underserved youth in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. Founded in 2023, this organization provides leadership programs, life skills training, and anti-racism initiatives to nurture future leaders and promote generational healing.

Key Programs:

Generational Healing Initiatives: Events that foster unity and empowerment.
Life Skills Training: Prepares youth aged 6-17 with leadership and professional skills.
Anti-Racism Through History: Encourages understanding and action against systemic racism.

🌍 Developing Communities Everywhere (DCE)

🇨🇦 Operating in London, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Developing Communities Everywhere (DCE) organization is dedicated to empowering racialized youth, students, and families through education, skill-building, and wellness initiatives. A flagship initiative, the Racialized Youth Research Committee, fosters leadership and addresses systemic barriers through research and advocacy.

January Focus: SDG#1 - No Poverty

The Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI) - a pathway driving empowerment to Black-led organizations worldwide.

Our ongoing work with the Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI) continues!

This month, we are focusing on SDG#1: No Poverty, a critical goal aimed at eradicating poverty in all its forms. Together, we can empower communities, support grassroots organizations, and create opportunities for sustainable development.

Why SDG#1 Matters:
Poverty affects millions worldwide, limiting access to essential resources like education, healthcare, and housing. By addressing the root causes of poverty, we pave the way for individuals and families to thrive. Supporting SDG#1 means building a future where basic needs are met, and everyone has a chance to succeed.

How SBC is Supporting SDG#1?

Throughout January, all funds raised through the GBPI platform will go toward organizations in the SBC directory that align with this goal. These nonprofits work tirelessly to:

Provide essential services such as food, housing, and education.
Develop long-term solutions to poverty through community empowerment.
Create opportunities for economic advancement.

With over 130 Black-led organizations across 22 countries listed in our directory, we’re proud to amplify their work and help them drive change!

Our Impact So Far

Since the launch of our fundraising efforts in August 2023, we’ve raised over $2,370 CAD to support nonprofits in our directory.

Every dollar you give helps organizations directly addressing poverty make an even greater impact in their communities.

How You Can Get Involved

Grant type/amount: Variable – typically $100,000 to $500,000 per year for 2–5 years (project-specific funding)
Eligible projects: Projects that amplify the leadership of equity-deserving groups to address systemic barriers to economic and social justice at local, regional, or national levels. Initiatives must align with McConnell's "Communities" focus area, aiming to create inclusive and equitable communities. We have established a Resources Hub and a Provider of essential services like our recently launched tool “Business Development Assessment for Nonprofit“.
