Founder's Message

I can’t help but reflect on the powerful women who shaped my journey—and the vision behind Support Black Charities (SBC).

I always think about women like Harriet Tubman. A woman who risked her life to safely guide HUNDREDS of slaves from America and Canada during the 1800s through the Underground Railroad.

Why is this important?

The resilience from our ancestors continues throughout the generations.

Women like my mother sacrificed comfort to bring her siblings from Haiti to Canada.

Women like my two aunties, went on to build community centers and transformed the lives of countless Black families.

I saw firsthand, the power of giving.

This is why we think about "how can we carry our legacy with EVERY SINGLE initiative we support?"

Now it is our turn.

Our turn to pave the way forward for the next generation.

Over 54% of the nonprofit organizations listed in SBC’s online directory are women-led organizations.

Now is the time to honour every woman who uplifts their community toward equality, justice, and a better world.

Food Security & Nutrition Awareness

Good nutrition is a key foundation for health and well-being, but what happens when access to nutritious food is a privilege rather than a right?

🤔 For many Black communities, food insecurity is an invisible crisis—one that goes beyond individual choices and is deeply rooted in systemic inequities.

For many, nutritious food is a privilege, not a right.

Historical inequities, economic disparities, food deserts, and stagnant wages continue to push more families into crisis.

The pandemic only intensified these struggles, and today, the working poor face a silent epidemic—where even full-time jobs don’t guarantee food security.

March is Nutrition Awareness Month.

Let’s work to ensure that nutrition is accessible to ALL!

How can we break this cycle?

Let’s talk solutions, not shame. Because food justice is health justice.

We will start by saying the solution has to go beyond donations and food drives.

Durham Region Association of Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs (DRABPE)

DRABPE founded in 2017 is led by Dane Lawrence and Silvan Murray with a mission to support and elevate Black entrepreneurs and professionals in the Durham region, located east of Toronto, Ontario.

The organization was created to fill a gap in local resources and provide networking opportunities, mentorship, and critical business support that Black business owners often had to seek outside the region. Through programs such as:

Financial Literacy Sessions designed to help Black small business owners manage and grow their businesses
Black Youth Career Launch providing Black youth with access to career paths in STEMM (Science, Technology, Data Analytics, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine)
Entrepreneurship Workshops & Networking Programs tailored to empower Black professionals through community-building (Every Friday - 1st Fridays Durham)
TD Bank Partnership to expand financial education and business resources

DRABPE is making a meaningful impact on the economic landscape of Durham by fostering a supportive environment where Black professionals and entrepreneurs can thrive. With the rapid growth of the Black population and the increasing number of Black-owned businesses in the region, DRABPE’s efforts are vital.

Their youth programs have seen heightened participation, while their work with small business owners equips them to overcome entrepreneurial challenges and succeed in an increasingly competitive market.

Through initiatives like financial literacy sessions and mentorship, DRABPE ensures these businesses have the support they need to flourish.

Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI)
