Reflecting on the tremendous momentum we've gained from our recent summer events. 

One thought has been on my mind.

Philanthropy is not just about giving—it’s about empowerment.

Every donation, every initiative, and every effort to uplift Black-led organizations is a reclamation of the power and influence that has been systematically siphoned for generations. 

Our recent events such as The Mastermind (held August 14th) focused on strategies nonprofits could leverage to think like a business sustainably. 

The Blocko (held August 25th) brought the entire family, Black artisan vendors, and nonprofit organizations together for a day of outdoor fun. 

This is what we call #BlackPhilanthropyinAction.

The kind of action that will elevate our community and create the impact we want to see.

We know that Black-led organizations receive less than 0.2% of philanthropic funding available. 

Instead, we want to see the Black community continue to persevere, innovate, and thrive sustainably. 

Whether you’re a donor, a nonprofit leader, or someone who simply cares about the future of Black communities, now is the time to act.

Featured SBC Member Organization 

Something Positive for Positive People (SPFPP)

In honor of Suicide Prevention Month this September, we are featuring Something Positive for Positive People (SPFPP).

An organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with herpes and breaking down the stigma associated with the diagnosis.

Founded by Courtney Brame, SPFPP began as a suicide prevention resource after Courtney discovered the emotional toll that a herpes diagnosis can have, with many individuals reporting suicidal thoughts.

In fact, 1 in 3 people diagnosed with herpes express having suicidal ideation shortly after their diagnosis. SPFPP was created to offer vital emotional support, community-building, and advocacy for those living with herpes.

Through programs such as:

• Stigma Minimization Training for healthcare professionals,
• 🎧 Podcast Interviews where real stories about herpes stigma and experiences are shared,
• 📞 1-on-1 Support Calls offering a safe space to seek guidance and support, and
• 🧘‍♂️ Restorative Yoga sessions designed to heal emotionally,

SPFPP works tirelessly to change how herpes is perceived and managed in both healthcare and society. This stigma is often unseen but affects millions, making awareness and support critical to improving mental health outcomes.

They are hosting Men’s Emotional Wellness Symposium - November 30 from 10AM - 2PM EST to discuss the importance of emotional intelligence and redefining male wellness.

Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI)

The Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI) continues to be a driving force in empowering Black-led organizations worldwide. 

We launched GBPI with a clear focus for every month and a question we like to ask ourselves is if “Black organizations receive as little as 7 cents for every $100 donated to Canada’s big charities”, then what initiatives can we take bridge this gap all around the world?

GBPI is a unique platform allows supporters to donate to multiple causes aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Whether your passion lies in education, health, or economic development, you can make an immediate and widespread impact.

Our ongoing efforts have raised $2,370 Canadian dollars to support the nonprofits listed on SBC's Online Directory of vetted organizations since the launch in August 2023. 

Your support is crucial to our mission.

While August was an incredible month of championing all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our commitment to creating lasting change continues! 

At GBPI, we focus on amplifying Black-led nonprofits and changemakers aligned with the United Nations SDGs, ensuring that the work for a more just and sustainable world thrives year-round.

For September, our focus is on SDG #4: Quality Education. We’re raising funds and awareness for over 140 global nonprofits working tirelessly to provide access to education and promote learning opportunities for all. 

Education is the foundation of a better future, and together, we can support these organizations to continue their impactful work.

But the mission doesn’t end here. GBPI invites you to stay involved beyond September to contribute to other critical SDGs that empower communities worldwide.
