The Power of Black Philanthropy: Uniting for Impact, Change, and Empowerment

Black Philanthropy Month in August is an important time when we come together to focus our philanthropic efforts on organizations serving the Black community. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about the historical lack of giving to these organizations and the need for collective action to address systemic inequities. During this month, we celebrate the power of Black philanthropy and the incredible impact it has in uplifting and empowering Black individuals and communities.

It is an opportunity to highlight the power of collective giving and its impact on empowering and uplifting Black individuals and communities. Black Philanthropy Month has evolved since it started and we want to celebrate that evolution and shed light on the role of philanthropy within the Black community.

This year will also mark the beginning of Support Black Charities’ Global Black Philanthropy Initiative, a new initiative that we hope will help close the funding gap for so many Black-led and Black-serving organizations.

SBC Events

We don’t win unless everybody wins.

We’re excited to announce more information about the Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI). Every year we see some organizations who succeed during Black Philanthropy Month – and throughout the year. However, others don’t have the network or the visibility to raise the funds necessary to operate and thrive throughout the year. SBC’s GBPI aims to close this funding gap.

Starting August 1, 2023, rather than searching for a single organization, you can donate to a category on our directory (each corresponding to 1 of 17 SDGs). The amount received will be evenly distributed to each organization in that category.

Black Philanthropy Month

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) is a program put on by The Women Invested to Save Earth Fund (WISE). Founded by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, the annual global summit was first launched in August 2011. BPM was created to celebrate African-descent giving all over the world. BPM has reached more than 19 million people across 60 countries. Since inception, Dr. Copeland has worked with over 30 women from multiple countries to organize events that celebrate the global Black Diaspora.

BPM has become the world’s largest global Diasporan community coalition to celebrate and empower Black funding in all its forms.

Highlighting the power of Black self-love, the theme for 2023, “Love in Action”, focuses attention on the root meaning of philanthropy as love for all humanity, including Black people. Stay tuned for more information about events happening in August.

SBC is the only organization dedicated to increasing the visibility of Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused organizations worldwide while working to boost charitable giving within the global Black Community.

SBC has partnered with over 120 vetted organizations in 18 different countries listed on the directory – all of whom have an incredible impact on the world around them.

Here’s how we are fulfilling our mission:

We are continuously engaging with active and impactful organizations to grow our online directory.
We feature organizations, their programs, their events, or their executive/volunteer teams on Social Media to amplify their mission.
We bring attention to and raise awareness of issues or matters specific to the Black experience.
We look for valuable resources for organizations to share on our website’s Resource page. (Ex: grants, funding, courses, etc.)
We actively promote our vetted directory to attract volunteers and potential donors to find Black organizations to support or engage with.
We are committed to assist Black organizations become sustainable and self sufficient.
We have established a Resources Hub and a Provider of essential services like our recently launched tool “Business Development Assessment for Nonprofit“.
