Let's focus on building a new legacy within our community

Creating a new legacy for our community by breaking the current cycles, breaking down barriers, and dismantling systemic challenges. That often starts with our community’s youth. We have spoken about the next generation of activists, but there are also a number of organizations who are working with Black youth to break the current cycles of poverty, violence, and systemic prejudice they face on a daily basis. Here are just a few from the SBC directory.

100 Black Men of London: Uplifting the Black community and empowering the youth.
Business is Jammin’: Motivating Black youth and stresses the importance of education and personal development.
Desta Black Youth Network: Centers on education, employability, and entrepreneurship to build financial security.
Every Mikkle Foundation: Creating change through educational opportunities, global awareness, events, and access to resources.
Generation Chosen: Enhances the emotional intelligence of young adults from underserved communities.
Girls for a Change: 100% of the high school seniors involved in their programs have not only graduated but have also pursued higher education opportunities. (See more below!)
Helpers Social Development Foundation: Contributing to the welfare of underprivileged children, youth, and women, focusing on education, economic empowerment, and health awareness programs.
Keep 6ix: Impacting lives and helping at risk youth to succeed through mentorship, counselling, workshops, and other resources.
Kids In Cleats: Helping children to rise out of poverty through education, self-empowerment, and sport.
Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association: Celebrating the stories that form our collective history.
One Voice One Team: empowering youth to utilize their extraordinary leadership skills and talents to better themselves and their community.
Rest Centres: Helping to raise BIPOC youth out of housing insecurity.
The Next Gen Come Up: Encouraging youth to pursue activism, organize with their peers, and get involved in community service.

Resources for Organizations

You may have noticed that the SBC website has a new look! We are so excited to offer so many different features and resources for organizations. We have over 70 vetted Black-led and Black-serving organizations on the list so far and the community is growing.

It can be so difficult for organizations to find resources - both funding and access to tools and experts. We have added a new Resources tab with information on Grants & Funding Opportunities as well as Non-profit Tools & Courses. These lists are updated weekly, so check back often for more opportunities.

Featured Organization

Girls For A Change

Girls For A Change was founded in 2000 with the goal of empowering Black girls to realize their full potential through personal development, innovation, and social change in their communities. They believe that Girls should be able to succeed in school, college, workplaces, and their communities. With programs serving the Central Virginia area in the Unite States, Girls For A Change realized that Black girls and young women needed more access to support and resources to end the cycle of poverty and prejudice they face on a daily basis.

Their programing has served more than 30,000 girls in the United States since inception. Programs are centered around social change projects, developing problem-solving and leadership skills, financial literacy, community engagement, and so much more.

Girls For A Change’s Camp Diva Leadership Academy is currently accepting applications for Girls in grades 6 – 8. This STEAM-based summer day program shows Girls that they can succeed in these types of professions. Each day is spent learning about programming, sewing, robotics, creative outlets, and more. Other programs like Immersion Lab for high school and early college students and the Girl Ambassador Program for high school students provide professional development and job readiness opportunities.

Black Business Giving Back

Support Black Charities likes to highlight when our community comes together. Sometimes this means featuring businesses who give back. In March 2022 we were contacted by a company in Montréal who wanted to find a deserving Black organization to donate two large TVs to. They wanted the donation to go to an established organization working with youth in the Montréal area. Working with the SBC team they selected an organization from the directory. They felt that Desta BYN was perfect and SBC made the connection. The TVs were delivered shortly after.

While the company wishes to remain anonymous, we wanted to highlight this good deed that will make a huge difference in the lives of many youth!
