Raising awareness about men's health among the Black community

There is a lot to celebrate this month. It is National Caribbean-American Heritage Month in the United States, Pride Month globally, World Environment Day, Global Wellness Day, Juneteenth, World Sickle Cell Day, Windrush Day in the UK, and the list goes on!

We also wanted to highlight that Men’s Health Week is coming up June 13 – 19. Did you know the leading causes of death for Black men are heart disease, cancer, and stroke? Did you know that Black men live 7 years less than other racial groups? Access to healthcare services among the Black community is partially to blame, which is why Men’s Health Week is so important.

Men’s Health Week not only highlights the importance of health and wellness of boys and men in general, but it is also a time for us as a community to come together to lift those around us. We need to share knowledge and encourage our brothers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, and friends to look after their own health so they can live long, healthy lives.

Healthcare shouldn’t have to be about finding the courage to see a doctor. It is about representation among service providers, culturally appropriate care, and coming together to have difficult discussions as a group rather than seeking out care individually.

100 Black Men of London

Founded in 2001, The 100 Black Men of London (100BMOL) serves the community in the UK. Led by Black men, it delivers programmes and activities focused on Mentoring, Education, Economic Empowerment, and Health & Wellness.

They are focused on building up Black youth to not only be the best versions of themselves, but also to secure the future of the community. They are working to change the narrative around Black youth in London – to create positive examples through positive actions and experiences.

Since inception, 100BMOL has reached over 10,000 youth, delivered over 250 Health & Wellness programmes, and facilitated over 2500 mentoring sessions. They are truly connecting the Black community in London and surrounding areas.

100BMOL just closed their Community Mentoring Programme for the summer, but it will start up again this fall. They also have other events throughout the summer such as daily fitness sessions via Zoom and in person and regular workshops addressing mental health and other personal challenges. If you’re looking to get involved in the work that 100BMOL is doing within the community, they are currently seeking volunteers and ways to raise awareness for the organization.

SBC Updates

Easier than ever to find an organization!

The new website offers many different features and resources for both supporters as well as organizations. And we are currently working on updating a few other new features as well.

For supporters looking to find an organization to support, one of the main concerns we hear regularly is that it can be hard to know whether an organization is legitimate or not. SBC founder Anick personally vets each organization that is added to the directory. There are currently over 70 vetted Black-led and Black-serving organizations on the list.

Not only can supporters search for an organization in a specific category based on who an organization serves and what their mission is, but you can also now search based on current needs. The search function also gives the opportunity to refine your search by entering specific keywords such as “volunteer youth Canada” or “mentor youth Atlanta”, etc. There is also a general “Current Need” category in the directory where supporters can search for general needs overall.
