Building community through Black Owned business

We always talk about community – especially through giving. And one of the ways we can give back to the Black community is to support those of us around us who are making major changes in their lives. Most of us know at least one person who owns a business. Whether it is your Auntie who makes her own hair products, your cousin who designs and sews clothing, or your father who runs a catering business, owning a business is no easy task. It has also been proven over and over that Black owned businesses notoriously lack the resources they need to succeed. Those businesses that do succeed are supported by our own community and a determination to build a legacy for themselves and for their families.

We are inching closer to Giving Tuesday and most of us are thinking about giving back and supporting vulnerable members of the Black community around the world. If you are looking for ways to support Black owned businesses, there are organizations that help business owners succeed.

Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce offers programs and resources to business owners across Canada. They recently launched Black Business Direct, a Canadian Black Owned business directory in partnership with Uber.
Afro Caribbean Business Network empowers business owners in and around Toronto, ON (Canada) through knowledge sharing, access to resources, and a sense of community.
Business is Jammin’ works directly with youth in Nova Scotia, Canada to give them access to the tools and training they will need to succeed in business. They are building the future of our community.
Black Business Professional Association offers programs to support business owners and professionals on the road to success.

Of course, as we head into the holiday season we can always shop Black owned businesses as well. We would love to hear about your favourite Black owned businesses. African Identity and Culture Centre (CICA/AICC)

CICA/AICC was founded in 2018 to support children and youth and help them understand the power of being an afro-descendant. They are investing in the future of the Black community through programs designed to educate young people about the unique identity, values, and culture of Afro-descendant people.

Also known as the “Centre de l’Identité et de la Culture Africaines – CICA” in the French speaking community, this bilingual non-profit organization wants to support and build future leaders free from any complexes that outside discrimination may create.

Serving the Toronto, Canada community, the pandemic forced CICA/AICC to shift programming online – which meant they could reach a broader audience! They have monthly education programs online for kids, teaching them about African identity and culture in both French and English. The next one will take place on November 20^th and you can register here.

They are currently looking for fundraising and volunteering support.

Ready for #GivingTuesday? Here's how to get involved whether as a supporter or an organization

Since its inception in 2012, #GivingTuesday is known as a global giving day that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. It is celebrated on the Tuesday following the widely-recognized U.S. shopping events: Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Over the past 5 years, it has been popularized and fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. It has grown into its own global movement uniting individuals, communities, corporations, and organizations for a common cause.

In line with #GivingTuesday, Support Black Charities’ mission is to build a more just and generous world. With just about 3 weeks left until November 30th, it’s not too late to join the movement whether you are a supporter or an organization. We have shared some simple but powerful ways to engage your people, your community, your workplace, or your organization to create a wave of goodness.
